The first step in becoming a volunteer is to attend a Volunteer Orientation (click on "Get Involved" for upcoming Volunteer Orientations). Depending on which volunteer opportunities you choose, you may need to go through additional training. Volunteers receive many great rewards, including meeting new people and making a difference in our community.
LITERACY TUTOR: Tutor a Literacy Kansas City adult learner in reading and writing. SMALL GROUP LITERACY TUTOR: Assist with an adult small group literacy class that meets twice a week. MATH TUTOR: Assist with a math class that meets twice a week for 90 minutes. STUDENT ASSESSOR: Responsible for interviewing, assessing, and determining the appropriateness of potential adult learners who enroll in the program within the scope of the mission and policies of the organization. COMPUTER TUTOR: Assist adult students with computer literacy. TUTOR ASSOCIATE: Make monthly phone calls to a pre-selected group of tutors. TUTOR TRAINER: Work with the Director of Training to train incoming tutors. WORKSHOP AMBASSADOR: Assist with workshop set-up, tear down and welcoming participants. COMMUNITY OUTREACH: Represent Literacy Kansas City at Volunteer Fairs, speaking engagements and other special events. STAFF SUPPORT: Assist with staff support activities, as needed. OFFICE SUPPORT: Fill in for or support Administrative Assistant by performing general receptionist duties. SPECIAL EVENTS VOLUNTEER: Assist with special events, including the Corporate Spelling Bee, the Literacy Luau, the Volunteer and Student Achievement Awards and the Book Drive and Book Sale. TAPE REVIEWER: Review videotapes of tutors meeting with their students in order to give the tutor feedback of their tutoring strategy. The process is referred to as Tutor Assessment and Performance Evaluation.
