Eligibility Statement
1. To be eligible for tutor training, a volunteer shall:
• be at least 16 years old
• tutor an adult learner twice per week, 90 minutes per lesson, at times agreed upon with the adult learner; (team tutors shall meet once per week, 90 minutes per lesson)
• meet with his or her student at an approved tutor site (barrier-free if needed)
• agree to supply his or her transportation to the approved tutoring site without assistance from Literacy Kansas City or the student
• not have been convicted of any sex offense or any crime of violence

2. To be eligible to be matched with a student, candidates shall:
• demonstrate the desire to teach by participating in and successfully completing a 1.5-hour Volunteer Orientation and the 15-hour Tutor Training Workshop
• demonstrate the ability to attend to a task for at least 90 minutes
• be able to speak and understand English well enough to communicate clearly
• demonstrate appropriate behavior for working one-to-one with a student, which excludes such behaviors as:
o insensitivity or disrespect toward others
o use of offensive language
o harassment (any behavior perceived as offensive, after being asked to stop)
o disruptive, loud behavior
o threatening behavior
o disregard for personal hygiene
o attendance at tutoring or other Literacy Kansas City-related activities under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs
• accept Literacy Kansas City’s policy of non-discrimination by agreeing to comply with the creed, policies, and mission of the organization and by avoiding statements or behaviors that contradict the spirit of the creed, mission, and policies

3. To be eligible to tutor, candidates also shall:
• be able to see well enough, given optimum lighting conditions and assistive devices if needed (such as magnifying screens, enlargement on a copy machine, large print [18-point type], or a closed circuit monitor), to differentiate characters on the printed page
• demonstrate reading ability by writing a few sentences without assistance and with minimal errors or by reading aloud material that is at least three reading levels higher than material that will be taught – OR – by demonstrating comprehension of high level reading material
• demonstrate tutoring skill by successfully completing the practice sessions and homework during the tutor training workshop
