Tutor Certification Summary
Certification Requirements
A Volunteer Tutor is Certified upon completion of the following three criteria:
• Attend Volunteer Orientation
• Consecutive attendance at 15-hour Tutor Training Workshop
• Sign Tutor Contract
Recertification Schedule
The recertification period begins upon completion of the initial certification requirements. Tutors must accrue the minimum number of points within each twelve-month period following their initial certification. Tutors will receive notification of their points accumulation progress six months and three months before their recertification date. Tutors are encouraged to document their points on the attached Certification Log.
Standards:
• Meet at least 9 hours per month 1 point per month
(Team tutors shall meet at least 4.5 hours per month)
• Meet at least one hour more than minimum requirement 1 point per month
• Turn in monthly Student Progress Report 1 point per month
• Participation in a special group/grant project 1 point per month
• Attendance at In-Services 5 points each
(One of which shall be the Comprehension In-Service within the first year of Certification)
• Attendance at Volunteer Forums 5 points each
• TAPE (Tutor Assessment & Performance Evaluation) 5 points
• Contract renewal 1 point
Minimum number of points required for recertification: 30 points
At the discretion of the Program Staff, tutors may be eligible to receive pro-rated points for certain situations (i.e., extended illness or vacation of tutor/student, extended time on waiting list for new student, etc.). The tutor must notify Literacy Kansas City in advance of the situation for the pro-rated points to be approved.
Provisional Status
If a tutor has not accumulated the required points at the end of his or her twelve-month certification period, he or she will be placed on Provisional Status:
• The tutor will be notified that they have not met the criteria for recertification.
• Staff will identify steps the tutor needs to take in order to meet the criteria outlined for recertification.
• Tutors must accrue at least half of the minimum number of points (15) during the first six months of their Provisional Status period
• Tutors must accrue the minimum number of points (30) during their twelve-month Provisional Status period
If the minimum number of points haven’t been accumulated as indicated above:
• The tutor will receive notification that his or her service with Literacy Kansas City has been terminated and the tutor’s student will be re-assigned.
• Tutor will lose privileges that are afforded to certified Literacy Kansas City tutors.
• Tutor will be offered other volunteer opportunities with Literacy Kansas City.
• Tutor will receive Exit Interview form.
