Approximately 250,000 adults in the Kansas City metropolitan area function at the lowest literacy level and are considered functionally illiterate.

Adults at this level typically cannot read a newspaper, perform simple calculations, complete a job application, or pass the GED. Their children are more likely to grow up  illiterate than are children of well-educated adults.
