Anyone 16 or older is eligible for our services. Current students range in age from 16 to 80.

There are 3 easy steps to enroll. First, the student calls 816.333.9332 for a confidential phone interview and to find out the dates of the Student Orientation Sessions. Next, the student attends the three-part Student Orientation Sessions where they'll be introduced to our program and we conduct a skills assessment. The student is placed on a waiting list and attends Start Now classes while they are waiting assignment to a tutor. Finally, the student is assigned to a volunteer tutor, usually within 3 to 6 weeks.

Prospective students enroll because they want to improve their skills, not because someone else wants them to. Therefore, we must speak directly to the student. You may wish to be present during the phone call to offer support to your friend or family member.

While students are on the waiting list to be assigned to a tutor, they attend 'Start Now' classes on Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. Once a student is assigned a tutor, they meet at a mutually agreed-upon time and at a public location. Students and tutors are expected to meet twice a week for 90-minute tutoring sessions.

Students and tutors meet in a public location that is convenient for both of them. Some go to Literacy Kansas City, others meet in libraries, churches or community centers.

Yes! Students are expected to do at least 60 minutes of homework or outside reading six days a week. The more homework they do, the faster they will improve their reading skills.

Tutoring is provided at no charge. Students are asked at enrollment if they can pay an annual membership fee of $40, which covers the cost of their materials. If they are unable to pay, the membership fee will be waived.
